Building Microservices Finished

Posted on Jan 28 2015

Today I finished the last of three full reviews of my forthcoming book, Building Microservices. I can't say I'll be sad to see the back of Acrobat! All in all, it's taken a little over a year, but all being well it should be in print in a few weeks.

The process of writing it has been surprisingly enjoyable. Having spoken to other authors, I know that many of them got to the point where they couldn't wait to see the back of their books. I think I've been in the enviable position that I was able to get it done quickly enough that it didn't become a millstone around my neck! O'Reilly's toolchain certainly helped. Their Atlas system lets me write in asciidoc, use Git for version control and build PDF or epub's whenever I want. Having heard horror stories for some people around writing technical books (one colleague told me his publisher requested he wrote everything in word!) I really appreciate how much this system got out of my way and allowed me to concentrate purely on the book. I do plan to mine the git repo at a later date to see if it gives me an insight as to the writing process, and if I do I'll post the results here.

All in all it's been one of the most rewarding processes of my career to date, and I'm sure it won't be the last book I write. But right now, I think I need a bit of a break!
